The ins and outs of living in Puerto Rico

Triple-S Salud

Triple-S Salud is the largest and most popular health insurance company in Puerto Rico. There is simply no place in Puerto Rico that does not accept this insurance company. Their plans vary and although this is the largest company, make sure you look at all the coverage details as some people have reported that another company had a plan better suited for their specific needs.

Click here to read about my experience with Triple-S Salud. It has been MOSTLY good, but I am currently REALLY upset and frustrated with them.

Triple-S Salud was established in 1959 and by 1965 Blue Cross and Blue Shield chooses them as its exclusive licensee in Puerto Rico. If you see the insurance card, you will see the Blue Cross and Blue Shield logos in it.

Like most of the health insurance companies in Puerto Rico, Triple-S Salud covers Dental as well. I have to admit, I was a bit shocked and surprised to learn when I lived in the states that the dental coverage was separate from the health insurance. My whole life growing up here in Puerto Rico, I always had dental coverage as part as the overall medical coverage, so it took me off guard to see that in the state I lived in, dental coverage was a separate thing.

Click here if you are a federal government employee and would like to see their coverage brochure for 2013.

In all honesty, my experience with health insurance companies in Puerto Rico has been MUCH better than my experiences in the states, and I mean MUCH BETTER. Not only is it much more affordable, but at least the plan that I have covers so much more.

To give you an example, when our first child was born in the states, we had a nice bill for about $70,000, partly because she was in the NICU for a few days. In order to pay for this we had to search for every single state help we possibly could find, the insurance company didn’t want to pay for more than they did because they did not think some of the services were necessary among other things! It was a NIGHTMARE!

However, when our second child was born here, my TOTAL bill for everything was a whopping $0!

Yes, I was shocked to see that, but I was very impressed. Some other plans may have a small co-pay, but at least my plan covered it all and there was absolutely no problems with anything.

One thing I haven’t seen here that I did have in the states was reimbursement for gym attendance, maybe some other company has it but I have yet to find an insurance company that offers it.

In the states, there was a program in which if I went to the gym at least 3 times a week, I got a certain amount of my monthly premiums reimbursed, all I had to do is get a printout of my attendance every month at the gym and submit it and I saw the reimbursement in a few days.

  1. Hi jay

Don’t know if you remember me..I moved to Ceiba about 2 years ago.
I have retired from the states and have BC/BS medical.

I am having difficulty finding a doctor that accepts BC/BS from the states. I really need help. I know that BC/BS and Triple S are connected however I don’t know in which way

I really can’t afford to get new insurance as I have 100% coverage with BC/BS.

    Please help

Hello Chris! OF COURSE I remember you! How’s life in Ceiba!?

Yes, I do remember when I lived in the US and I had my father’s insurance, it was a hassle up there because even though it was BC/BS, because it was from PR they made me pay out of pocket and then ask for reimbursement, which is what you can do here. You can contact your current BC/BS and ask if they have any in network providers here in PR. Usually what people do is just to fill out the reimbursement form and then they get their money back but that could be a hassle. But otherwise I’m not sure what to do. They should be able to tell you if they have someone here that accepts that plan.

Triple-S is an independent licensee of BC/BS so it’s kind of the same but they may have some differences or limitations. Here’s a link to their national BC/BS search.

      Hope this helps!

  2. Good morning Jay!

Thank you so much! This is extremely helpful! I did have the right number for Triple S (and was able to access their website but forgot about google translate lol) but this is a new number for Humana.

Thank you again. I have loved Rincon for 18 years so I’m definitely excited that I will soon it call it home.

This is a wonderful website — thank you! Have a great day and happy holidays!

Yes, I always recommend Google’s Chrome browser because on the upper right hand corner there’s an icon than when you click it you can translate the website. You sometimes get some funny words but you get the gist of it usually.

I am so glad I am able to help you! Rincón is great! I’m so happy you’ll get to call it home!

Happy holidays to you too! ¡Feliz Navidad! =)

  3. I read your info about healthcare in PR, but I couldn’t find any mention of Medicare. I’m sure there a lot of ex-pat retirees on the island from the US mainland. Does Medicare exist for those folks (me included)? Thanks!/gw

    • Jay-Webmaster

      Hello Glenn!

Yes there is medicare in PR. There are private companies such as Triple-S and Humana that supplement Medicare. But the answer is yes, there is Medicare.

I found a link that may help you. It’s from the Medicare Consumer Guide.

      Here’s Humana Medicare.

Last but not least, Triple-S Medicare.

      Check them out!

      Take Care!

      • Thanks Jay,

I appreciate your help immensely. Looks like I’ve got a lot of reading to do! /gw

      • Hi Jay!

I am moving to Rincon January 30th and because I don’t yet speak Spanish, I am having trouble trying to reach someone at Triple S or Humana. Also, I don’t know what the plans are so I don’t know what to press to talk to someone. I am looking for individual health, dental and vision care.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have gotten help from this site before so thank you!
