General Discussion / Tramites del coche enviado a P.R.
« Last post by Erikita on November 27, 2016, 03:16:29 AM »
Hello, again!

My friend plans to send his car to Puerto Rico and has made those arrangements with a freight company. Once the car arrives in San Juan, are there businesses that specialize in getting the car through all the transactions and ready to be picked up by its owner? I lived in Ecuador for many years and there was a thriving business of individuals and negocios hired to stand in the lines, pay the various taxes, etc. Thank you for your help!

Additional question.  Does the weather in PR come mainly from the sea to the land everywhere or is there a predominate direction?

I like to sit and watch the weather come in.  In central USA that means watching to the west, but it looks like storms in the Caribbean come more from the dast or south.

Thank you.  Those are areas where one can stumble in first arrival.  The "dress up" fits the way I was raised (I think suit and tie scared off the dinosaurs) but I will have to re-educate myself. LOL.

I have observed here in the northern areas of the USA, that people tend to meet/mix with a particular group, not excluding others but just those that "fit' together.  The problem is that strangers don't "fit" because they don't know anyone.  Its that step between that makes it hard for new comers.

The trick with daughters is for them to celebrate at 15 in PR and then visit, say, Minnesota for their 16th birthday.  Ha.

Hello,

There are many activities for all age groups, you just have to look for something that interests you. This is a very family oriented culture so the elderly community is often cared for by their family members and they tend to usually be part of groups such as the Exchange Club or Lion's Club among others.  Any coffee shop would do if you want to sit and drink coffee, we have many coffee shops with delicious coffee.

Suit and tie are normal for men in the workplace and it is also common for men to dress up to go out shopping, but it is not as common for men to dress up to go shopping like it is for women. Jeans are common for men to wear out during the day but a man should wear nice pants and shirt to the workplace and to go out in the evenings. In fact there are many restaurants and hotels that will not let you in if you are not wearing at least some "Semi-Formal" clothing past 6 or 7 PM, and that goes for both men and women.

Church attendance is really high here, this is a mainly Catholic culture and just very religious overall, so yes the Church attendance is very high. You are also expected to dress up to go to church and most women do wear high heels to church as well.

We celebrate the Quincea

General Discussion / Cultural questions
« Last post by tolonaro on November 01, 2016, 04:20:10 AM »
Thinking about life patterns around where I have been:  What do elderly (ie retired etc) do?  Are there gathering places in the living areas (city or villages) where people sit to talk and drink coffee (or whatever?

Your wife mentioned cooking in high heels.  Are suit and tie normal wear for work and/or for shopping for men?  Are blue jeans acceptable wear?

Is church (mostly I assume Catholic) attendance high?

Do PR celebrate the 15th birthday of a young woman or the 16th as is most common in the 48?

Introductions! / Living in Aguadilla
« Last post by Erikita on November 01, 2016, 01:24:16 AM »
Hi there! My boyfriend is moving to Aguadilla at the end of the year, and I am thinking of joining him there for a few months out of the year. Right now we have two questions. One, are there businesses that specialize in taking care of tramites such as paying taxes and paperwork for a car shipped over from the mainland? And, two, what do you know about special education services in Puerto Rican public schools? I have a teenager with autism who requires some special ed services. He would do well in a vocational school that trains people with disabilities. He is presently in 10th grade. Thank you for any information you can provide! I'm sure we will have more questions as moving day approaches.
